Ewing Irrigation Products traces its beginnings back to 1922, when Atlas Lawn Sprinkler was founded in San Francisco, Calif. In 1938, King W. Ewing joined Atlas, participating in sales and installation. King acquired the design and supply division in 1948, renaming it Ewing Turf Products, laying the foundation for what has developed into one of the largest wholesale providers of professional quality landscape and irrigation materials in the United States.
In 1963, King’s daughter, Sue, and husband, Ray York, assumed the day-to-day operations of Ewing and relocated company headquarters to San Leandro, Calif.The company name was changed to Ewing Irrigation Products in 1967 to reflect its metamorphosis into a full-line irrigation supply distributor. Assisting Ray and Sue in achieving their vision, sons Doug and Richard have been involved in the development and management of the family business since 1978.
In 2002, Douglas W. York was named President of Ewing, and Richard A. York was appointed Executive Vice President, establishing a third generation of Ewing/York family leadership. Under their direction, Ewing would grow and experience many changes: innovative ideas, expanded territories and new locations, an ever-increasing product offering, advancing technologies and a growing team of caring and knowledgeable employees, enabling Ewing to provide customers with the best service in the industry
In 1961, Bill and Eleanor Hayes founded Automatic Rain, an irrigation distributor based in Menlo Park, California. The Hayes family operated Automatic Rain for 38 years, acquiring various companies and launching additional full service locations. In 1977, David Lange opened Mesa Sprinkler, a wholesale irrigation supply company Dave had founded while working in the irrigation industry. In 1997, after 20 successful years of running Mesa Sprinkler, he purchased Horizon Turf, which specialized in the sale and service of turf maintenance products and power equipment. This union of both turf equipment and irrigation under one roof was an innovation to the industry. Mesa Sprinkler and Horizon Turf were consolidated as Horizon in 1998. In January 1999, Bill Hayes of Automatic Rain and Dave Lange of Horizon merged the two companies under the name Horizon. The newly merged Horizon immediately flourished and grew to one of the largest distributors of irrigation, equipment, lighting and fertilizer in the western United States with 40 locations in 8 states.
